5. Colostrum

Newborn calf must receive a minimum of 3-4 litres of good quality colostrum within 12 hours of life.  This will provide protection against future infections.  Use a colostrometre to eliminate poor quality colostrum.  Excellent quality colostrum can be frozen and slowly thawed (water bath) when needed. Use a commercial colostrum replacer product if good quality colostrum is not available or during a Johne’s eradication program.

6. General recommendations

·  This new feeding schedule suggests to use 30kg of milk replacer in order to achieve better growth before weaning.

·  Any change to this schedule should be done with judgement, according to calf’s size and stool’s consistency.

·  Clean and rinse ALL feeding utensils after each feeding.

·  During extreme conditions (cold or wind), offer an extra feeding of milk replacer.

·  Consult your veterinarian for any signs of disease, fever, parasites, …

7. Starter ration, weaning, forage and water

·  Introduce a quality CALF starter ration as soon as 5 days of age.  Offer small quantities twice a day.

·  When the calf is consuming a minimum of 900g (2lbs.) of starter ration per day for more than 3 consecutive days, the weaning process can be initiated.  Consult your local feed dealer for feed recommendations.

·  Offer good quality forage when the calf is 3-4 weeks of age.

·  Fresh, clean water should be available at all time, starting at 5 days of age.
